Around the Allentown Fairgrounds, This Fall's Openings Follow the Event Calendar

Three changes are happening this fall within a few blocks of the Allentown Fairgrounds. A pizza takeout counter opened on North 15th Street. The taproom on North 17th Street is being turned into a sandwich restaurant and brewhouse. A piano lounge on West Allen Street is closing. Looked at together, the new businesses are pointed at the fairgrounds and the steady stream of expos, markets and shows it hosts long after the fair packs up. The business that's leaving was a place people went to for its own sake.

Local Stone picked its storefront with someone else's event in mind

Local Stone opened in late September at 446 N. 15th St., in the space that used to be Willie Joe's hot dog restaurant, according to The Morning Call. The grand opening was Oct. 1. Before that, co-owners Jess and Brian Macker ran the business as a mobile pizza vendor starting in 2020, which makes about six years on the road before they settled on a fixed address.

The menu includes "The DG" with soppressata and chorizo and "The Hoff Detroit" with Mike's Hot Honey. Delivery covers an 8-mile radius. Jess Macker described the location they were looking for to The Morning Call:

"We wanted a spot where it just becomes a natural next step for our customers to come, pick up their food and then go on to their events with their family and friends."

That's a takeout business thinking about the trip somewhere else. A few blocks west, the next change on the map is built around the same idea.

The 17th Street taproom is already promoting its next tenant

Weyerbacher's Allentown Taproom & Biergarten at 448 N. 17th St. sits next to the Fairgrounds Hotel, a full-service restaurant known for seafood. WFMZ 69News reported that the taproom will become a J's Original Steaks and Subs restaurant and brewhouse. Ed Lozano, CEO of Savant Beverages LLC, which bought Weyerbacher in 2022, described it to the station as a collaboration with Fairgrounds Hotel owner Dominic Germano. The plan is to combine Weyerbacher's beers with J's food.

The timing is still loose. Lozano told WFMZ the project was "in the early planning stages" and that they hoped to open "by the end of the year." No firm date was given. A recap of that interview on Breweries in PA is dated Sept. 3, 2026. WFMZ also mentioned the taproom might close briefly for updates. As of this writing, nothing we found confirms that a closure has happened.

Weyerbacher's own food page still lists the Allentown Taproom & Biergarten and labels J's Restaurant and Brewhouse "coming soon at Allentown Fairgrounds." Until J's opens, the brewery suggests ordering from NY Stromboli Pizza or New Garden Chinese Restaurant, or bringing your own food to eat with the beer. The brewery's own description puts the location in relation to the fairgrounds, which says a lot about the traffic the operators expect.

The calendar next door rarely takes a weekend off

The case for building around the fairgrounds comes from the fairgrounds' own schedule. The current event list from the Allentown Fair, marked "Updated 9/30/26," shows the Agri-Plex at 1998 Liberty St. booked through the end of November. The Agri-Plex is a 58,000-square-foot expo center.

Date Event at the fairgrounds
Thu., Oct. 15 Morning Call Prime Expo
Sat., Oct. 17 Lehigh Valley Wicked Oddities Market
Sat.–Sun., Oct. 24–25 Eastern PA Fall Home Show
Sat., Nov. 7 Antique Toy Show
Sun., Nov. 8 Pennsylvania Bridal & Wedding Expo; Bingo for the Rescue
Sat.–Sun., Nov. 14–15 First Frost Train Meet
Wed., Nov. 18 Lehigh County Senior Expo
Sat.–Sun., Nov. 21–22 Super Gigantic Garage Sale
Sat., Nov. 28 Vintage Clothing & Collectibles Extravaganza

From Oct. 17 through Nov. 28 there are seven Saturdays, and six of them have a fairgrounds event listed. The only open one is Oct. 31. The fairgrounds notes that event listings can change.

That calendar runs alongside a weekly one. The Allentown Fairgrounds Farmers Market at 1825 Chew St. currently lists hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. On most Saturdays this fall, the market and an Agri-Plex event share the same grounds on the same day. That's the kind of steady foot traffic a takeout counter or a brewhouse can count on.

1812 Piano Lounge was a different kind of business

The closing on this stretch is a place people went for the evening itself. The Morning Call reported that 1812 Piano Lounge at 1812 W. Allen St. will close Oct. 22, about a year after Jill Schaefer and Cindy Billera opened it. The coverage doesn't give a reason, and this post won't guess at one.

In her announcement, Schaefer said the goal had been "a place where great music brought people together, where strangers became friends, and where an ordinary night could become a soundtrack worth remembering," as quoted by The Morning Call. The lounge will honor gift cards through closing night, and Lis Bockelman is scheduled to perform that last evening.

For anyone holding a gift card, Thursday, Oct. 22, is the deadline. After that, the nearby business with a nighttime crowd of its own is on 19th Street.

The 19th Street exception still has a curtain time

Civic Theatre of Allentown is running Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical Oct. 9–25 at its Historic 19th Street Theatre, 527 N. 19th St. Civic's posted season skips from Matilda straight to December, with no November stage production listed.

So the last weekend of Matilda falls on the same Oct. 24–25 weekend as the Eastern PA Fall Home Show at the Agri-Plex. After that weekend, the only events on the calendars we checked for these blocks are the ones the fairgrounds has booked.

Fitting the rest of the fall around your own block

For anyone who lives near Chew, Liberty, Allen or the numbered streets between 15th and 19th, the useful view is a list of what's set and what isn't:

  1. Already open: Local Stone at 446 N. 15th St., for pickup or delivery within 8 miles.
  2. Ending soon: 1812 Piano Lounge's final night on Oct. 22, and Civic's Matilda through Oct. 25.
  3. Still open now: Weyerbacher's taproom at 448 N. 17th St., with the brewery's suggested food options or your own food until J's arrives.
  4. Planned without a date: the J's Original Steaks and Subs restaurant and brewhouse, targeted for late 2026.
  5. Every week: the Farmers Market on Chew Street, Thursday through Saturday.

Saturday, Oct. 31, is the one Saturday between mid-October and late November with nothing listed at the Agri-Plex. If you want a quieter trip to the market on Chew Street, that's the morning the schedule leaves open.

The way the blocks around the fairgrounds are changing this fall is the kind of detail The Cliff Lewis Experience follows across Allentown, down to which corners are filling in and why.
